For Oak Cliff’s History of
Helping Students
GO TO SCHOOL
After celebrating a decade of innovation and empowering work in the South Oak Cliff community and beyond, For Oak Cliff engaged in a strategic visioning process with The William Julius Wilson Institute and Bridgespan to identify its goals for the next decade. Chief Executive Officer Taylor Toynes and Chief Strategy Officer Xavier Henderson analyzed the most impactful education issues in the area. After reviewing the data, it was evident that For Oak Cliff needed to make a serious imprint on decreasing chronic absenteeism. With neighborhood schools boasting chronic absenteeism rates of 49 percent, the For Oak Cliff team recognized its unique position. They begin to design a dynamic strategy to change the trajectory of chronic absenteeism in the 75216 zip code. For Oak Cliff chose to pilot its work at Black Elementary and Todd Middle Schools, because of their significant chronic absenteeism rates. For Oak Cliff’s Director of Cradle to Career Education, Shareefah Mason, curated the Black-Todd Dream Team, convening educators from both campuses to devise and execute the strategy. The Go To School Campaign was launched at For Oak Cliff’s annual Back to School Festival, in August 2025. In a short time, the campaign has garnered a lot of success, but For Oak Cliff’s work is not done. The goal of eradicating chronic absenteeism is clear, and we will not stop until it is achieved!
Showing Up.
Making An Impact.
The Go To School program led the charge to increase perfect attendance in two Oak Cliff schools this fall semester.
Black Elementary School
Todd Middle School
For Oak Cliff's strategy to tackle chronic absenteeism began with an idea to amplify perfect attendance at Black Elementary and Todd Middle Schools. During the 2024-25 school year, Black had a total of 24 students with perfect attendance and Todd had 2. After analyzing the data, For Oak Cliff became intentional in cultivating a perfect attendance culture at both campuses. In just one semester of the integration of monthly perfect attendance initiatives, Black experienced an increase of 500% with 120 students attending school daily from August to December 2025. Todd Middle School had a 900% increase with 24 students not missing a single day, during the semester. This data is indicative of the perpetual and dedicated initiatives utilized to curate school cultures that embrace and celebrate school attendance!
Building Bridges Through Home Visits
In June 2025, For Oak Cliff prioritized home visits to combat chronic absenteeism. Before school started, they sponsored a 'Get on the Bus Tour' to show staff the neighborhoods and obstacles their students faced daily. In September, For Oak Cliff partnered with Stacey Van Hoy of Home Visits Partnerships to train over 40 teachers, principals, and staff on implementing home visits. The goal was to visit the homes of 60 at-promise students, by December 2025. Black and Todd staff and teachers exceeded expectations with 107 total visits!
